Full-time Commercial Underwriting Manager

he Commercial Underwriting Manager is responsible for managing the review, maintenance and implementation of underwriting philosophy, strategy and guidelines for commercial lines of business to achieve the desired profit and growth of the Company. Will participate and collaborate with Regional Marketing Managers in the management of territorial profitability and growth as well as management of individual agencies including their profitability and growth. Responsible for program updates and development of program enhancements. Will participate and collaborate with Rate and Compliance with regard to pricing.

Essential Duties

Lead the development and implementation of Commercial Lines underwriting philosophy, strategies, and guidelines by performing the following duties:
Analyzes new and renewal business to ensure the desired results are being achieved
Develop short and long-term goals and objectives for the Commercial Underwriting Department, establishes operating policies and procedures that are consistent with overall Company policies and operating objectives and monitoring and enforcing the compliance of assigned personnel with same
Develop programs within the department for risk improvement on existing policies
Monitors philosophy, strategies, and/or guidelines in participation and collaboration with executive management and Regional Marketing Managers and develops and implements changes to same as needed
Collaborate with the Regional Marketing Managers to acquire competitor information
Collaborate with Farm Underwriting Manager and Personal Underwriting Manager to assure that philosophies, strategies, guidelines and procedures are consistent for all lines of business when appropriate.
Monitor and enforce the adherence to philosophy, strategies and guidelines of the Department and Company by the assigned personnel
Analyze Commercial Lines profitability by performing the following duties and take corrective action where required:
Monthly review lines of business net loss ratios by state:
Identifying line(s) of business that need action
Quarterly review agencies’ direct loss ratios:
Identifying any agency that has an unacceptable loss ratio
Sharing the analysis with the Commercial Supervisor, underwriters and Regional Marketing Managers
Participate and collaborate with the Regional Marketing Managers to develop corrective action to improve an agency’s loss ratio when necessary
Analyze large losses and Underwriting Alerts to determine what information can be gleaned from each developing and implementing strategies based on the analyses
Participate and collaborate with Rate and Compliance to review and set pricing and to review competitor pricing
Review and amend guidelines to ensure the desired quality of risks is achieved
Participate and collaborate with the Regional Marketing Managers to perform annual agency reviews recommending and implementing action plans where necessary
Responsible for program updates and development of enhancements
Reviews program updates from rating bureau(s) for the various lines of commercial insurance making a determination whether to adopt and/or when to adopt
Will collaborate with Regional Marketing Managers to determine whether a program change is needed from a competitive standpoint
Will provide Rate and Compliance with SERFF ready information to perform filing
Researches, develops or updates enhancements on a bi-annual basis for the various lines of commercial insurance
Will collaborate with Regional Marketing Managers to gather competitive information to develop enhancements
Will provide Rate and Compliance with SERFF ready information to perform filing
Insure all commercial lines procedures and activities are in compliance with legal regulations affecting Commercial Underwriting as well as responds to insurance departments’ requests and correspondence with the Company
Direct Commercial Underwriting training programs ensuring the department has a well trained staff that adheres to Commercial Lines philosophies, strategies and guidelines
Performs other duties as assigned

Basic Qualifications

H.S. Diploma and education or equivalent experience will be considered
A minimum of eight (8) years of experience in equivalent position desired
Strong quantitative and analytical skills to determine and/or recommend underwriting actions
Leadership, managerial, innovation and initiating skills
Strong project management skills required
Ability to travel occasionally
Proficient reading, writing, grammar, and mathematics skills
Proficient verbal and written communication skills as well as interpersonal skills
Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, Adobe)
Knowledge of various office equipment
Requires a valid driver’s license
